Harold's life

Senior Citizen Swings into Sensational Sixty

The Big 6-0!
In March, Harold celebrated his 60th birthday at home with friends and family.  Lots of laughs were provided in a roast delivered by his son, Ben.  Jacob compiled the top songs over the past 60 years.
Good friends, good music and good food!

200 miles of bliss
Thirteen months after his bicycle accident (June 2011), Harold completed the Seattle-to-Portland (STP) bike ride in July.  He set a personal best by completing the first 100 miles (Seattle to Chehalis) in less than 6 hours.

In related cycling news … Megan continues to attend a ‘spin’ class with Harold three days per week.  Harold is fascinated by the efforts of his sweaty companion.  He was heard to say, “What happened to my wife?

Baby Hawken

The BEST news of the year was Jacob and Emily’s announcement that the third Hawken grandchild was on the way.

Yep ... it's a boy!

Lake Chelan
August found Harold and Megan in familiar territory on the shores of Lake Chelan.  They were joined mid-week by Ben, Cathryn, Asher and Naomi.  They enjoyed jet skis, speed boating, and inner tubing.  Great times!

During Megan’s spring break, she and Harold took off for a week of fun and relaxation in Bend, Oregon.  They enjoyed a gorgeous unit on the Deschutes River near Redmond.  Many attractions were still closed due to snow, but it was a wonderful time for a romantic getaway.

Asher and  bunny at pre-school
Asher is now attending pre-school at the ripe old age of 4.  His grandparents can tell how much he enjoys his time there.

Asher also spent some time at the hospital when his tonsils were removed in June.

Mariner Fanfest in January
It was cold but we had lots of fun at Safeco Field.  Asher loved the Bouncy Gym, the Mariner Moose, and running the bases … in that order.  Ben’s 20+ year love affair with the Mariner’s paid off – a picture with right-fielder, Jay Buhner.

Mayan Madness
Harold was released as the quorum leader in his ward to become the Seminary Supervisor for the stake.  Some might say this is similar to a ‘principal’, supporting the program everyday from 6:00am – 7:00am.  Between March and April, Harold helped organize a Seder, a Scripture Chase Mastery Bowl, and graduation.
Although he often felt as if he was drinking from a fire hose, it is an incredible experience to be surrounded by so many dedicated teachers and enthusiastic students.
Megan continues her calling as the CTR 5 teacher in Primary.  She loves her children and they love her!  Harold is her dedicated assistant.

Asher - 4th birthday

Naomi - 2nd birthday

Harold and Megan always loved his parent's dining room set. When they inherited it, they knew one day they would need to refinish and reupholster.  That opportunity came this summer.  It was a long, hard job for two people who had never upholstered anything before, but it looks gorgeous!   Our thanks to DIL Emily for her upholstery talents.

Naomi loves her 'Hello Kitty' slippers!

In passing . . .  It was with sadness that we suffered the loss of Harold’s brother, Herbert Harry Hawken, in January at the age of 61.  We laid him to rest beside his parents in June.
