Christmas 2016

Merry Christmas to all our family and friends!
Reception Results in Retirement
Recalculate, Rebound
In August, Harold was given a luncheon honoring his 25 years of service with the Boeing company.

Two days later, he was presented with a 60-day layoff notice ... what? And the next day, he received his 25th anniversary inside-the-gate parking pass!
What followed was a flurry of retirement seminars, classes, and meetings – social security, reverse mortgage, pension options, long-term care, Medicare – to prepare for that final day.  Exciting and daunting.
Recidivism
Harold’s last day at Boeing was 21 October and he hit the ground running by going back to his old ways.  He has been substitute-teaching in the Kent School District ever since.  One of his best days was the opportunity to teach in the same classroom with his wife.  What a hoot!
Rehearse, Recite
Since last March, oldest grandchild, Asher, has been in six school plays. His sister, Naomi, has joined him in the last three. So talented!
Peter Pan

The Lion King
Also ... GreaseJungle Book, Beauty and the Beast, & Annie!
Received
During August, we were treated to a wonderful evening at an Olivia Newton-John outdoor concert in Snoqualmie with old friends, Ron and Kathy Kleven.
In December, we enjoyed an evening at the Nutcracker Ballet in Seattle with our neighbor Joan Lawler.
Both performances were absolutely magnificent. We have wonderful friends!
Removal
Harold couldn't let Megan be the only cancer patient.  In June, he had surgery to remove a skin lymphoma. He likes to show off his scar!
Reliance
Beginning in May, Harold and Megan were asked to take part in a pilot program teaching Self-Reliance. So far we have taught Education for Life and Personal Finance. We have met many wonderful people – another blessing for us.
Recreation
June: Flying Wheels  100 miles through Redmond, Fall City, Carnation and Duvall
July: STP (Seattle to Portland)  205 miles down the I-5 corridor from the University of Washington to the Lloyd Center.
Reconstruction / Recline / Repair
As soon as school let out in June, Megan had her 5th and last surgery. It consisted of 'tweeking' the prior surgeries a bit so that everything was just right. She is now more gorgeous than ever!

Relax / Renew / Refresh / Revive
Castlegar, British Columbia
Kootenay Lake, British Columbia
In April, and again in August, Megan & Harold spent a week exploring beautiful Coeur d'Alene, Idaho.

Three generations welcome Margot.
Recount
The Hawken population increased by one this year with the birth of our 6th grandchild. H&M got home just in time from their week in Coeur d'Alene to welcome Jacob and Emily's second child,
Margot Ramona Hawken into the clan.
Born 13 August at 12:43 pm, 7 pounds 13 ounces, 19¾”.
On her blessing day

Rejoice
Christmas came early for the four oldest grandkids this year when H&M took them to see Disney on Ice at the Showare Center in Kent.  A good time was had by all!
McDonald's!

Glow-in'the-dark goodies

Rudolph noses

Will everybody look at the camera?  Please?

Remodel
Megan’s Christmas also came early this year. Although we remodeled the entire upstairs 8 years ago, we never got around to the baseboards. Megan said Harold’s Christmas gift (see next story) would look so much better if there were baseboards.  Installation was completed in November.
Recital
After many years of waiting patiently, Harold now has a new 95-year-old girlfriend – a beautiful, Knabe mahogany baby grand piano.
